Basketball Champions League developments

The format of the Basketball Champions League for the upcoming season will be modified in the following manner

– Total participation: 40 teams (instead of 32 as per current format)
– These 40 teams will be divided into 5 groups of 8 teams each
– The four Regular Season groups (A-D) that were produced at the Draw will remain intact with regards to their final composition
–  A new group (E) of 8 teams will be created
–  Composition of Group E will include AEK Athens (GRE), Partizan KK (SRB), Zielona Gora (POL), and 5 teams from the Qualification Rounds that will participate directly into the Regular Season
– The selection of the 5 teams that will not take part in the Qualification Round and will, instead, participate directly into the Regular Season has been done by considering a number of principles (among others: overall strength of the national league; participation of teams from that league into European club competitions; presence and performance of team in European club competitions in recent seasons)
– Based on the above criteria, the 5 teams that will participate directly into the Regular Season are (in alphabetical order): Besiktas (TUR), Dinamo Sassari (ITA), Ludwigsburg (GER), Spirou Charleroi (BEL) and Szolnoki Olaj (HUN)
– Group E will therefore consist of:

o   AEK Athens (GRE)
o   Besiktas (TUR)
o   Dinamo Sassari (ITA)
o   Ludwigsburg (GER)
o   Partizan KK (SRB)
o   Spirou Charleroi (BEL)
o   Szolnoki Olaj (HUN)
o   Zielona Gora (POL)

– The detailed competition schedule of Group E will be announced once the entire schedule of the Regular Season is confirmed
– The direct participation of these 5 teams into the Regular Season, modifies the Qualification Rounds since certain matches will no longer take place. Please note that the pairings of the Draw have not been affected and the potential final composition of the Groups remains the same
–  The impact on the Qualification Rounds is the following:

o   Qualification Round 1

  • Game no 1          Bakken Bears (DEN) vs Dinamo Sassari (ITA) is cancelled
